The smart fashion Rafale
We explain to you, fiber by fiber, the compositions of your favorite products and why they are included in our selection.
💯 The 100%
We favor products with a composition of 100% fiber because they are much more easily recyclable. Indeed, it is still difficult today to separate the fibers of the same material and products composed of a mixture of fibers present a real problem at the end of their life. For a circular fashion, we push the mono-fiber to the maximum!
🐐 Cashmere
This wool from goats from Mongolia is so soft and luxurious that we all love it. However, it poses problems regarding the treatment of animals. We therefore prefer labeled cashmere to ensure animal welfare. Since the rate of labeled cashmere in the world is still very low, we therefore always offer you classic cashmere. But we hope very soon to only see cashmere from happy goats in circulation!
🛞 Rubber
A material that you find a lot under your sneakers because it is flexible, adherent and shock-resistant. Natural rubber comes from latex, a liquid from the rubber tree. As for synthetic rubber, it comes from the chemical industry. So obviously, at Rafale, we prioritize natural rubber as much as possible, which pollutes much less than synthetic rubber. And we systematically tell you the category of rubber present in each product so that you can choose with all the cards in hand.
🌱 Cotton
It is true that cotton requires a lot of water resources and pesticides to grow.
Currently, it represents 23% of global textile production and only 1.4% of this production is organic. It is therefore difficult to do without it.
That's why at Rafale, we favor organic cotton and recycled cotton but we leave the door open to classic cotton to be able to offer you a wide choice. We have a dream however, to no longer see any at all on Rafale!
🌱 Organic cotton
Organic cotton is definitely one of our favorite fibers. We love cotton for its softness, its breathable and natural side. When it is organic, it avoids the main problems of its production: soil pollution and massive use of water. Why? Because when it is treated naturally, the soils are enriched with nutrients and then absorb water better.
In addition to that, organic cotton is more resistant than classic cotton, we approve!
🌱 Recycled cotton
Recycled cotton is a very interesting fibre but it is still not very present in the textile industry. It is interesting because it allows to revalue a material that was previously considered waste. However, like any fibre, cotton can lose quality when recycled. It is therefore still necessary to mix it with classic or organic cotton to guarantee the quality of the finished product.
👞 Leather
When we think of a piece that we keep for life, we often think of leather. Our shoes, bags, jackets made of good quality leather, we will wear them hundreds of times and they will surely pass from hand to hand for many years.
There are many questions about the use of leather, its origin, its tanning, its alternatives. At Rafale we choose to offer you quality leathers coming primarily from certified tanneries.
🌵 Vegetable leather
A new generation of synthetic leather made from plants such as apple, pineapple, cactus, mushroom, etc. Like traditional leather, it is not completely without impact on the environment since it is a mixture of plants and synthetic materials such as PVC or polyester. We still offer it to you because it releases on average 78% less CO2 than traditional leather, so it is clearly an alternative to consider.
👗 Cupro
It is an artificial fiber with a similar appearance to silk developed from chemically processed cotton seed down. This fiber is accepted because it already uses waste from cotton production and the products used in its manufacture are recyclable.
🪢 Elastane / Spandex / Lycra
Elastane comes from the petrochemical industry and, like other synthetic fibres, pollutes during its manufacture and use by releasing micro-particles of plastic.
On top of that, a material made from a blend of fibers with a high percentage of elastane is more difficult to recycle: elastane tends to stretch during mechanical processing, which puts the machines in difficulty.
At Rafale, we initially wanted to ban it from our selection. We quickly came to terms with its necessity in certain products such as leggings. Needless to say, non-elastic leggings would greatly harm our sports performance.
We then decided to limit ourselves to products whose elastane remained less than 15% of their composition.
🧪 EVA ethylene vinyl acetate
EVA is a synthetic foam material, widely used in the manufacture of shoe soles. It comes from the chemical industry but it is necessary for the comfort of our shoes, with characteristics of lightness, shock absorption and comfort. EVA has a soft and elastic texture, providing effective cushioning to reduce pressure on the feet. We tolerate it at Rafale, but we still favor recycled versions.
🐑 Wool
What's better than wool for our stylish and warm winter outfits? It's soft, durable, breathable and thermoregulating. We love it and need it in our wardrobes.
However, it raises real questions about the treatment of the animals that provide it to us. At Rafale, we therefore favor labeled wools (RWS, RMS, OPF, etc.), but there are still too few labeled products today, which is why we continue to offer you classic wool products. But we hope very soon to only see wool from happy animals in circulation!
🐑 Recycled wool
Recycled wool offers great possibilities and allows us to recover materials that were previously considered waste. However, like any fiber, when recycled, wool loses its quality, so it is necessary to mix it with other fibers; at Rafale we favor blends with new wool to ensure better quality and recyclability.
🌾 Lin
Linen is the best. It grows in France (Normandy is the world's leading producer of linen 🇫🇷), requires neither pesticides nor a lot of water and is naturally soft and resistant. We all remember our parents' linen suits that creased as soon as they came out of the closet. But the industry has made a lot of progress in this area and today offers us cool and comfortable products.
🌳 Modal / Lyocell / Tencel / Lenzing ecovero
These artificial fibers are developed from chemically transformed wood pulp. Unlike viscose, we accept them on Rafale because the products used in their manufacture are up to 99% reusable.
♻ Recycled polyamide
Polyamide is a synthetic fibre from the petrochemical industry, like polyester, it pollutes during its production, but also when it is washed because it releases microparticles of plastic into the water.
However, it is used in certain products to ensure the resistance of the fabric and its longevity.
So we avoid it as much as possible and we clearly say no to classic polyamide and we offer you naturally resistant products but on certain products like socks, knitwear, sports items, we accept a percentage of recycled polyamide.
♻ Recycled Polyester / Recycled Nylon
At Rafale we refuse polyester and nylon, because it is a fiber taken from the petrochemical industry, which pollutes during its production but also because it releases microparticles into the water when washing.
However, its characteristics meet the needs of the industry: impermeability, pleating, transparency, resistance, etc.
We have therefore decided to make an exception for certain products made from recycled polyester or recycled nylon so that you can find everything you need at Rafale.
🪡 Silk
Silk threads are produced by Bombyx worms, they offer soft, fluid and thermoregulating materials. To recover this fiber, the worms are suffocated and the cocoons are immersed in boiling water. Initiatives like Peace Silk are trying to create more ethical alternatives to silk production but the quality is not yet there. So at Rafale we offer you classic but quality silk products so you can wear them to the max!
👟 Tunit / TPU
A thermoplastic polymer that therefore comes from the chemical industry. It is often used in the manufacture of shoe soles, particularly in sports shoes. It is used because it offers good resistance to abrasion, wear and harsh environmental conditions, it is lightweight and has a great capacity to maintain its shape in varied conditions. It is tolerated at Rafale, but its recycled version is preferred.
♻ Upcycling
The art of recovering existing fabrics or products to create new pieces. You've probably heard of dormant stocks, all those unused rolls lying around in warehouses. This brand revalues these fabrics to avoid waste, and we know that love it!
